NOPJF - Help those dedicated people in New Orleans Law Enforcement whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina

The New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) Public Charity that has served the New Orleans Criminal Justice System since 1995. For more information on the Foundation's tax-exempt status, governance and finances, please visit www.guidestar.org.

The New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation is the only organization in New Orleans dedicated to improving the criminal justice system with a special emphasis on supporting the members of the New Orleans Police Department.

Whether it is financial support for housing, delivering donated equipment, enhancing educational growth, or helping implement operational reforms, the fundamental goal of the Foundation is to make New Orleans a safer place to live, work and visit.

NOPJF Celebrates Landmark Initiatives and Achievements

The effects of Hurricane Katrina have done significant damage to a justice system that was already in crisis. The opportunity for significant reform is also a byproduct of this horrific event.

Recruiting Support for NOPD

Post Katrina, recruiting and retention of police officers are a number priority of the Foundation. To address the current manpower crisis, NOPJF maintains a 24-hour recruiting hotline and performs preliminary applicant screening. We are now initiating a nationwide recruiting campaign; new recruits can expect housing assistance, tuition assistance and incentive pay.

Coordination of Local and Regional Criminal Justice System Initiatives

The Foundation has developed partnerships with the five surrounding parishes, the district attorney’s office, state, city and federal law enforcement agencies to improve quality of life and the effectiveness of interagency cooperation throughout all components of the regional criminal justice system.

First Responder Housing Program

According to Foundation assessments about 80% of all first responders working in Orleans Parish received significant damage to their homes. The Foundation has provided over $2.2 million in financial assistance to 420 first responders and their families. NOPJF has also partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build new homes for first responders in Orleans Parish with enhanced income limits and temporary stay options not normally offered by Habitat for Humanity.

Crime prevention

COPS for Kids, our acclaimed children’s program routinely serves hundreds of New Orleans’ neediest children each summer. Young people between the ages of 6-16 are referred to the six-week summer camp program by New Orleans Police officers who also work in the classrooms. Since its inception in 1995, the program has provided a safe and nurturing summer program for more than 4000 campers.
